Chesterfield

The Parish Church of St Mary and All Saits, Chesterfield, is AKA "The Church of the Crooked Spire".

The spire is both twisted and leaning, twisting 45 degrees and leaning 9 feet 6 inches (2.90 m) from its true centre. The leaning characteristic is believed to be the result of the absence of skilled craftsmen (the Black Death had been gone only twelve years prior to the spire's completion), insufficient cross-bracing, and the use of unseasoned timber.

Sinar Norma with Dallmeyer 14" F/5.6 lens

Sinar Norma with Dallmeyer 14" F/5.6 lens

Sinar Norma with Dallmeyer 14" F/5.6 lens.

This lens is a British Air Ministry commission, presumably used or at least made some time between 1939 and 1945. To be honest, this example doesn't look like it has seen much action. Glass is clean, uncoated, and of a Tessar-type design with two elements in the front cell and a doublet in the rear cell.

Marked A.M. 14A/3140 (Air Ministry code) item number UU420044 (the UU designating Dallmeyer-manufacture) and stamped J.H.D.10 for Dallmeyer.

Lens is huge (front and rear elements are of equal size, about 65mm across, total weight with lens board about 1.2kg) with 14" or 355mm focal length and F stops of 5.6, 8, 11 and 16 only. Too big for a copal 3, but the Sinar shutter on the Norma suits it well. On 4x5 it should make an interesting portrait lens, but it would cover much much more had I a larger back. (At least 10x8, more with possibly reduced sharpness.) I've just mounted it on a Sinar panel. (This was a top-hat style panel. On removing the central extension part of the panel, the resulting hole was exactly the right size. In absence of a decent workshop I epoxy glued the lens on and glued a flange on the rear so the glue supports it on both sides. Seems plenty strong enough. If in doubt I could add some screws later.)

tsim sha tsui : hong kong

Uncle 3 took me to his fave camera shop to get some used lens and my 40D body. while I was there, i drooled over the many many many many used lenses in the display cases. it was heaven.

in HK, you gotta know people and which camera shop is good. most of them will rip you off without blinking. so it's always good to be in the know. the fact that there are about a hundred all within a square mile radius doesn't help.

this was one of the test shots i did in the store.

and if you're ever in HK - go to this place.
